Thanks Larry, gee, U sure know your wood. My little Beautiful Woods booklet, Art and Science in Wood, led me astray again. It doesn't even have juglan hindsi.

So, now that that's cleared up, I can sleep well tonight. Storms a brewing down here though....
Hey Bud...you had it right. I'm afflicted with a passion for understanding what makes wood wood..or...zoot in Bob's case. I've amassed a fair to middling research library to keep my company here.

I have to admit being stumped on two pieces at the moment. They were sent as BRW gun stocks to Oakland, CA in the late 1940's. Still have the old address on them, "Telegraph at 25th, Oakland, Calif.". It isn't BRW and I don't have a clue yet

Takes a young man to tote a rosewood stocked rifle around in the mountains. I was one once, if I remember right. On many of the figured walnut gunstocks I did, my goal was that rich warm red of good Brazilian- if I ever get there, this walnut 000 will head that way too.MT

Okay, there was a tiny blurb in there about Claro, here it is verbatim:

"Limited amounts of walnut veneer, known in the trade as Claro Walnut, have in the past originated from northern California. The trees were Juglans regia, believed to have grown from nuts planted by early settlers."

Sorry guys, we should have started a separate thread. Anyway, Coe, thanks for keeping the old OLF alive with your wonderful donation of this Walnut Back and Side set.

My gunstock thingie was cetainly off thread topic, but I think the walnut discussion was good to help describe Coe's generous auction donation.
